Being a Resident
District Hiring
The Residents’ search for a specific teaching position at a district school is called the district hiring process.
Accepted Residents are guaranteed a position in the district.
Eligibility is determined according to strict Maryland State Department of Education requirements which stipulate that candidates must have either an undergraduate major or a graduate degree in a subject with a minimum G.P.A of 2.75 in that content area in order to teach a given subject. Residents are especially needed to teach in the areas of math, science, and foreign language.

District hiring is coordinated through our program office—our program staff work closely with district HR staff and principals on identifying schools that need teachers.
Getting hired by an individual school is a challenging process. Due to mobility within the school system, it is often difficult to predict exact vacancies until very close to, and in some cases just after, the beginning of the school year.
Securing your position at an individual school site is a process experienced in phases, and will therefore look different before, during and after training.
- May happen through job fairs with principals, individual school-based interviews with principals, or through central district HR personnel.
It is the mission of the Baltimore City Teaching Residency to aid Residents in being hired by schools with the highest need for teachers. As a result, all candidates should be prepared to teach wherever they are needed most. Again, Residents will have the opportunity to express preferences, but positions are primarily driven by school needs and by each Resident’s qualifications. As a Resident, you must be prepared to be extremely flexible about your teaching assignment.
