Being a Resident
Professional Development
Year-long Professional Development
Twice a month throughout the school year, Residents attend small, content-based seminars led by successful veteran teachers for ongoing professional development. Through the Teaching for Results seminars, Residents go deeper into their learning of instructional design and delivery. The seminars focus on teaching BCTR Resident Teachers how to translate their existing content knowledge into effective classroom practice and provide Residents with the most effective tools and strategies to teach the concepts.
Teaching for Results provides approximately 50 hours of live instruction for participants over the course of 10 months. The seminar approach couples the art of teaching with subject-specific strategies making Teaching for Results different from other new teacher support programs.
Residents feel strongly that seminars are helping them become better teachers: In 2006, 95% of Residents felt that the Teaching for Results seminars were relevant to their classroom experience, and 98% of Residents felt that the seminar instructor helped them become more effective teachers.
Ongoing Network
By joining BCTR, Residents join a network of people who are working together toward the same goal: closing the achievement gap for students in hard-to-staff subject areas:
Peers
Our Resident cohorts provide a network of professionals dedicated to sharing ideas and supporting each other.
BCTR Staff
Throughout the certification process and program, BCTR staff provides Residents with prompt personal communication. We are always happy to answer any questions or address any concerns. After acceptance, Residents are supported throughout the job search and are coached through each step of the certification process.
Faculty
Residents have the opportunity to draw on the knowledge of a variety of educators. From the Institute instructors and host summer school teachers to content seminar leaders, veteran teachers are providing guidance and assistance to Residents as they learn the craft of teaching.
