In their own words…
Here are some of the reasons our newest Residents joined our program:
“I joined the BCTR because I am passionate about my city. Unlike many of my peers, I had excellent teachers and my experience with them literally saved my life. I owe them, so I need to be that for the next generation of Baltimore’s youth.”
“I joined the BCTR because I wanted to make a real difference in the world. I was successful in my life before, but I was unfilled. Teaching, even for the short time I’ve done it, has made me so happy. I’m going to make someone else’s life better and that’s the best reward.”
“I joined the BCTR because I want to be the effective teacher and mentor I wish I had when I was growing up. I graduated high school at the bottom of the class but graduated college at the top of the class. Great teachers make a difference.”
“I joined the BCTR for the same reasons that I wanted to teach. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a super hero so I could help others. Being a part of BCTR and being a teacher, I have the opportunity to do that every day.”
“After working with young men who suffered from the negative effects of educational inequality, I decided it wasn’t enough to hope the education gap closed – I decided I wanted to be the reason the education gap closed.”
“I joined the BCTR because I had wanted to teach for a long time, but I never had the means for the education. I thought BCTR would be a fast track to the classroom, and little else. Instead, I found an amazing group committed to a common sense, yet radical idea: effectively train teachers to systemically remove the inequalities in education.”
“I joined the BCTR to be the change I wanted to see in America’s education system.”
